About Me

landscaping for the fun of kids

My name is Amelia - welcome to my blog! I am the mother of four very active boys ranging from 9 years to 3 years. When I am making improvements around my home and my property, I try to focus on how I can make those improvements while keeping things fun for the kids. This past year, I worked with a landscaper to create an outdoor environment that was fun for the kids, but looked nice from the road. I wanted the landscaper to design some elements into the yard that the kids could limb around on and let their imaginations run wild without having to worry about things getting destroyed in the process.

How to Create a Beautiful Rooftop Terrace Garden

A rooftop terrace garden can be a beautiful addition to any urban home. It not only adds value to your property but also provides a peaceful and relaxing space for you to unwind after a long day. With the right planning and execution, you can transform your barren rooftop into a lush green oasis. In this blog post, we will guide you through the steps of creating your own rooftop terrace garden.

Assess Your Space and Budget

Before starting any project, it's important to assess the available space and set a budget. Measure your rooftop area and take note of any obstructions such as HVAC units or chimneys that may impact the layout of your garden. Consider factors like sunlight exposure, wind direction, and water access. Once you have a good understanding of your rooftop's limitations and potential, set a budget that includes the cost of materials, plants, and any necessary professional help.

Choose Your Garden Style

Next, decide on the style or theme for your garden. Do you prefer a sleek modern design with minimalistic features? Or do you envision a cozy and lush green space filled with colorful flowers? Whatever your preference may be, make sure it fits within the limitations of your space and budget. Research different styles and gather inspiration from online resources or magazines to help you narrow down your options.

Plan the Layout

After selecting a style, it's time to plan the layout of your garden. Consider how you want to use your rooftop space - do you want an area for dining and entertaining? Would you like a small vegetable garden? Think about using vertical gardening techniques to maximize your space. Create zones within your garden by using different levels or features such as raised beds or seating areas.

Choose Your Plants

The type of plants you choose will depend on factors such as sunlight exposure, wind conditions, and maintenance requirements. Select a mix of perennials and annuals for year-round color and variety. Consider adding evergreen shrubs or potted trees for added privacy and greenery. You may also want to incorporate native plants that are well-suited to your local climate and require less maintenance.

Prepare Your Rooftop

Before installing any garden features or planting, make sure your rooftop is properly prepared. This may include reinforcing the structure, adding a waterproof membrane, and ensuring proper drainage. It's important to consult a professional for this step to ensure safety and avoid any potential damage to your property.

Get Creative with Features

A rooftop terrace garden can be more than just plants. Consider incorporating other features such as water elements, lighting, or seating options. These features not only add visual interest but also enhance the functionality of your space. For example, a small fountain can create a calming ambiance while string lights can add a cozy touch for evening gatherings.
