About Me

landscaping for the fun of kids

My name is Amelia - welcome to my blog! I am the mother of four very active boys ranging from 9 years to 3 years. When I am making improvements around my home and my property, I try to focus on how I can make those improvements while keeping things fun for the kids. This past year, I worked with a landscaper to create an outdoor environment that was fun for the kids, but looked nice from the road. I wanted the landscaper to design some elements into the yard that the kids could limb around on and let their imaginations run wild without having to worry about things getting destroyed in the process.

Water Features For Residential Yards And Gardens

Many home gardens have interesting water features such as ponds, streams, waterfalls, and fountains that can add beauty and variety to a residential yard. A landscape maintenance service company can maintain these water features that are customized for your property and the location where you live. Here are some water features that you can consider for your residential garden:

  • Fish Pond - A fish pond can contain fish and aquatic plants to add unusual interest on your property. A fish pond can be shallow or deep and provide the perfect habitat for different types of fish and reptiles such as frogs and toads. Choose a location for your fish pond that gets a combination of both sun and shade during the day.  Flagstones can be used to line the outside edges of your pond and provide seating for your family when desired. Light fixtures can also line the outside edges of your fish pond to create interest at night. Your landscape maintenance service technician can keep your aquatic plants trimmed and add more plants as needed in your pond.
  • Running Stream - A recirculating stream running around your residential property can enhance the choice of plants and trees in your yard. A recirculating stream saves water and can be moss and lichen free because of the constant movement of the water. A water pump and filtering station can be hidden by plants and trees in a quiet part of your yard. When installing your stream, have and additional water valve installed close to your house to adjust the speed of the stream according to current weather conditions. A running stream will encourage wildlife to visit your yard. Your landscape maintenance service can monitor the direction and flow of your running stream to make sure that the water continually recirculates naturally.
  • Waterfall - Falling water is a soothing and interesting feature for a residential yard. A waterfall can be successfully used to unite different areas of your yard on a property with varied ground levels. Additionally, the sound of falling water can help to disguise neighborhood noise in a city or country location. Waterfalls add humidity wherever they are installed and can attract local wildlife such as large and small birds, butterflies, squirrels, rabbits, deer, and other mammals. Ask your landscape maintenance technician to trim the trees and plants around your waterfall to keep it free flowing.
  • Water Fountain - A water fountain can also be installed in the middle of your fish pond for another unique water feature. Design your water fountain to have a shutoff valve near your residence door so you can control when you wish to use or not use the fountain. A water fountain can also have underwater lights to illuminate the splashing water when in use at night.

Ask your landscape maintenance service technician for advice on the type of water features that would be best in your yard. Once you have decided on the features that you want, have them installed with the plumbing, electrical, and waste lines buried in the ground and the water feature controls installed near your house. In this way, you can maintain your yard yourself between scheduled landscape maintenance (from professionals such as Vista Landscape and Maintenance, Inc.) visits. With some research and planning, you can have a one or more water features on your residential property that will give you and your family great pleasure and enjoyment for many years.
